Introduction
The number of celebrities that have been accused of murdering someone at some point in their lives is staggering. Politicians, athletes, movie stars, singers, and even a former First Lady have been accused of causing a death or even multiple deaths.
Some of these individuals, such as Spade Cooley, were found guilty of murder. Others, such as actor Paul Kelly, were found guilty of the lesser crime of manslaughter. A few were never charged because of the accidental nature of the deaths.
The public reaction to celebrities accused of murder has been confused. The famed silent movie star Fatty Arbuckle had his career destroyed because of a death he probably had nothing to do with. O.J. Simpson became a pariah after being accused of murder. Yet actor Paul Kelly, who served time in San Quentin for allegedly beating a man to death, had a long and successful career after leaving prison.
A few individuals, such as the legendary rapper Snoop Dogg and fight promoter Don King, actually found fame and fortune after being accused of homicide. Having served a prison sentence related to a man’s death didn’t seem to affect King’s career at all. Snoop Dogg is still one of America’s most famous rappers despite his alleged involvement in a deadly shooting.
Even though homicide is widely viewed as one of the most heinous crimes, it is not always a deterrent to fame and fortune. Sometimes, however, they will have to suffer the consequences just like the rest of us.
